INDIA FASHION WEEK (IFW), CONTINUES TO BE THE ONLY OFFICIAL FASHION WEEK OF THE COUNTRY

New Delhi, The India Fashion Week (IFW), a property held by the Fashion Design Council of India continues to be the official fashion week of the country. Being a not-for-profit organisation industry association formed with the objective of developing the fashion design industry of the country, FDCI organises India's largest mega-fashion event (India Fashion Week) and other initiatives aimed at promoting the fashion design industry in India.

Lakme was the title sponsor of India Fashion Week till April 2005, and hence the event was called Lakme India Fashion Week. The benefit offered to Lakme was event led product launches as well as title branding. However, India Fashion Week has always been owned and organised by FDCI. Lakme's contract with FDCI as title sponsor of India Fashion Week expired in April 2005. For 2006 and onwards, FDCI envisaged two India Fashion Weeks - Fall / Winter and Spring / Summer and negotiations were undertaken with Lakme for budgets in line with organisation of two events (double the amount). However, this was not in consonance with the business plan of Lakme. Thus in 2006, the India Fashion Week would have a new title sponsor, who will replace Lakme in the event title.

IMG was hired by FDCI, as an agency for implementing sponsorship tie ups and event organisation in 2000. Their contract with FDCI expired in December 2004 and they were provided with a one-event extension to cover the India Fashion Week 2005. Thereafter, FDCI undertook a transparent selection procedure on the basis of equal competence where IMG, TIML (Times Group Company) and Percept D'Mark participated. The best offer was evaluated by the FDCI Board and Percept D'Mark was appointed by FDCI to organise India Fashion Week from 2006-2008. The best offer also took into account among other things, a value added programme for the growth of the designer industry through our events.

The announcement of Lakme Fashion Week does not affect the India Fashion Week Events. Even today, designers participate in corporate sponsored shows all over the Country. The Blenders Pride Fashion Tour is a good example to go by. Any new event would only add to market exposure for the design industry.

The India Fashion Week would be held in Delhi from April 5 to 9, 2006, at The Grand, New Delhi.
