The skin surface provides nutrients that help bacteria grow. The concentration and numbers of bacteria vary in different parts of the body, the maximum being in parts like the scalp, genital areas and the feet.
Eccrine and apocrine are kinds of sweat that are produced by our bodies. Eccrine helps to regulate the body temperature and is found all over the body. The body odour culprit is Aprocrine that is found in the under arm and groin area. The sweat smell occurs only after Apocrine reacts with the bacteria on our skin.
Sweat smells different for each individual and can indicate specific internal problems:
- A beer smell could indicate a yeast condition
- The smell of nail polish remover could indicate diabetes
- An ammonia smell might be an indication of liver disease
Any odour that is not that distinct sweaty smell should be spoken to with a doctor.
Personal hygiene
One should always maintain personal hygiene. Well for that matter it is indeed sad to be talking about personal hygiene. The need to be clean should come from within.
However, a daily routine or at least a thorough washing using soap should be done especially in the areas where the sweat producing glands are maximum such as armpits, groins, and feet areas. It is essential to clean these areas as the bacteria will act more giving out the horrible smell. Since some people sweat more than others, they might need to wash themselves thoroughly at least twice or thrice a day.
The use of antiperspirant and deodorants should also be routine and trying out new ones does you no harm either. In fact there may be different ingredients that might work better some people than others. Another thing that can be tried out is shaving or waxing your underarms. Since this is the one place that provides great surface for sweat to stay and gives the bacteria a fertile breeding ground.
You could also wash your clothes in hot soapy water and concentrate on washing the area that comes maximum in contact with sweat. Do not ever wear yesterday's clothes, as however clean you body is the clothes will have the smell of yesterday's sweat smell.
Control Body Odour:
Once we know that we have a problem of body odour we should try and work towards getting rid of it. You cannot do much about the bacteria on your skin; any amount of scrubbing or washing would be able to get rid of only fraction of the bacteria and that too for a short while. Neither can you stop yourself from sweating altogether. But there are still several other things that you can do to reduce the amount of sweat you produce. Try following some tips that are listed below:
- Avoid wearing synthetic clothes.
- Should avoid tight fitting clothes.
- Avoid hot drinks and it would be better if crowded places were also avoided.
- Use deodorants with aluminum or zinc, as these metals kill odour-causing bacteria. Heavy sweaters should use deodorant containing aluminium chloride.
- Wash clothes more often and it would be advisable to use some detergent that fights odour such as Tide, Surf Excel.
- Should surely bathe at least once with an anti bacterial soap. Some people have also suggested using benzoyl peroxide or an antibacterial ointment.. There should be no problem but please read all instructions and before use.
- Avoid the regular consumption of spicy or sharp-smelling foods. The odour comes through the pores.
Deodorants / antiperspirant, make you smell nice and fresh but do not cut down the sweating. Remember to keep yourself odour free you need to maintain cleanliness of self first.
