Forget hair gels and male bronzers as the boy's toys. For the latest in male grooming has certainly taken the proverbial leap -- into a world of caviar wraps, diamond facials, botox and wine baths, especially more so now with the advent of the festive and wedding season.
For Nisha Jhaveri of Myrah Spa, she claims to have started getting in more men than women takers for her vinotherapy. "I'd describe it in one word -- pampering," she smiles. "Men really love soaking in the red wine and essential oils. It gets more exotic too with nothing less than caviar facials." And, if you thought being enveloped in a heavenly-smelling chocolate wrap is girlie, think again. "Guys are getting under it as well," she announces. "Cocoa has anti-cellulite properties as well; it's a mood elevator too, so it has a universal appeal."
If it's all about first impressions, then that's probably what driving men to skin lightening treatments this season. "October onwards we get at least a 50 per cent increase in clients for the diamond skin polishing regime," informs Dr Abhijit Desai of Evolve Med Spa. "In addition, men want hydration masks, botox fillers and help with patchy pigmentation problems.
You'll be surprised at how much the increase in clients for laser hair reduction has gone up in this month alone. And because males are getting more body-conscious, they're opting for breast reduction surgery that allows them to show off a more contoured, sculpted look," he reveals.
Says Kiran Bawa, cometologist, Iosis Medi Spa: "While guys regularly come in for chest and face waxing and do their eyebrows, it's now body polishing (with cocoa, milk powder and almonds) treatment that is also very popular with the male crowd. In addition, I have so many guys who want the mid-range organic strawberry, banana and papaya facials."
Ask hair stylist Ity Agarwal of Psalm 23 and she tells you it's a 'shear' joy for guys when it comes to the latest hair trend. "It's the 1940's look -- a side parting with a slight puff that the likes of George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio have; everyone's been wanting to show it off now," she says, adding, "dreadlocks (unwashed look) and Cornrows (tight plaited look) are in too."
Eating right to look right goes the adage. And that's getting the men folk to shed the pounds through diet. "A low-fat, average protein one, similar to the Mediterranean Diet," explains Pooja Makhija, consulting dietician, Clay Wellness Centre, "allows you to eat everything, but in moderation. We used to get about 15 male clients per week but that figure has just doubled."
