A huge work-related issue is rejoining job after pregnancy. But quite surprisingly it's not about husbands or in-laws creating problems for the woman to join work just after pregnancy neither it is about her facing problems juggling work and home. It's about finding the right job after the big break. Usually, deciding to go back to work is the easiest part. The real challenge is finding the right kind of work that is both emotionally and financially rewarding.
“When you rejoin after pregnancy, the world changes around you. You are lagging behind one or two years, plus you have an added responsibility of kids and you find it hard to juggle home and work together,” says psychologist Tamanna Sheth. “There are many decisions to make, like what job to join and whether or not to rejoin the same job. Moreover, things develop way beyond your knowledge and you remain unaware about it because of your absence. So things get difficult for women when they want to rejoin after pregnancy,” she adds.
But that is not the case for all jobs. IT, business, human resources or creative work (mostly) are more welcoming than places involving research, science or continuous stay and time. That's the reason why you have to plan and keep everything decided from the beginning. Career counsellor and psychoanalyst Pawan Gokhale says, “We are not asking you to plan every step of your life. But you should have at least some idea what you want to do and how. Example, if you want to rejoin your old job after pregnancy, you should make sure you keep track of things, stay in touch with the happenings there and general advancements in the field and study. If you are good, then no one can ever take your place. But competition is so harsh these days that there remains no guarantee of anything.”
Shubhra Shah, an architect by profession started off her career as an IT professional. “I wanted to rejoin work after pregnancy but I could just take out sufficient time for kids. I was upset in the beginning but then I realised that since I'm a woman and as per social norms, I'm not the prime bread earner of society. Since I had done a course in architecture and that was something I loved doing, I started my own firm sitting at home. Today, I earn much more than my husband and no one's complaining. I'm doing what my heart wanted to do and when you follow your heart, you always succeed,” she smiles. When you rejoin after pregnancy, there's going to be guilt and stress. But be clear about what you want from your life and keep more options open. Try to find out what you are best at and give it a shot. Being a woman is one of the most complex experiences, but you are strong enough to get going with that, aren't you?
