What we wear to office is a true reflection of our personality, style and attitude. For example the tapping sounds of high heels symbolise the arrival of the glam doll in office. However, at times trying to take this image a bit too far might just backfire on the person. We spoke to a few designers and stylists and asked them how much is too much for men and women at their workplaces.
For women
Apart from plunging necklines the recent addition to the list is the visible butt cleavage. Is that permissible in office?
Designer Archana Kocchar says, "I think a lot of people also wear loud colours that hurt the eye. Office dressing should be more powerful and should leave an impact. Thus straight-legged trousers with long shirt tunics are in."
Designer Anita Dogre agrees with this. She says, "Low necklines are a total no-no. Even coloured bra straps peeping out of a white shirt can give out wrong signals. I think it's also very unprofessional to over-accessorise – like wearing too many bangles or anklets, because they make a lot of noise. Anything that attracts too much attention at work is discerning."
Archana adds, "Even loud make-up is annoying. Closed footwear is highly recommended. No chappals please."
Nitin Bal Chauhan says, "Skirts for women are good and classy but be careful about the length of the slit. Also the slit should always be on the side and not the centre."
For men
Designer Ashish Soni says, "Keep it simple. Don't shock people by wearing a bright red shirt to work. Align your clothes with your personality. That will also ensure that you don't give out wrong messages to your boss and juniors. Always have a shirt with cufflinks and team it with a tie. However, one suggestion – don't try and experiment fashion at office."
He further adds, "A lot of young boys these days wear those low-waist jeans which exhibit their briefs. It's not fashionable at all."
Nitin Bal Chauhan says, "I think the thickness of the stripes of your checkered shirt is very important. I read somewhere that if the stripes are very thick you will not be taken seriously. Also, a lot of people don't co-ordinate the tie with the shirt. It's absolutely not cool." He further adds, "By flaunting your underwear, you just prove that you are a fashion victim." Designers say many people wear loud colours that hurt the eye.
