Mumbai: The name Salvatore Ferragamo brings back images of the famous shoe-designer and his impressive clientele of Hollywood celebrities in the 1920s.
Cut to present, 37 year-old Salvatore Ferragamo, the grandson of the much-loved shoe designer is in the city.
He's in the city to introduce a range of white and red wines from the family-owned company. "This is my third visit to Mumbai." Well, without being judgmental and uncanny one ought to look at his shoes first and then look at what he is wearing. He seems like hes used to such a situation. "Im wearing a pin-striped suit and black shoes from the house of Ferragamo."
Really, what a luxury to be a part of a family that has worldwide appeal - especially with women. But Salvatore Ferragamos passion is not fashion but wines, unlike his grandfather. He says, "I was born and raised in Tuscany and happened to get interested in the wine-making process. My parents always told me that I should be passionate about what I do, because only then will I be able to do my best."
For some reason, one has to ask him why wines and not fashion? He patiently replies (we guess, he knows the question even before it was uttered) "I had no inclination towards fashion. I have an identical twin brother James Ferragamo he is in charge of the womens leather goods department. People get confused all the time and query about products. At times when they call out James, I instantly reply, Yes. Its quite normal," he smirks.
However with a tag of being from such a respectable family, how does he feel? He says, "It is a privilege to be a Ferragamo, the name itself spells elegance, fashion, luxury. On the other hand, its a responsibility you have to live up to. It is a lot of pressure created on oneself. Believe in yourself and do your best." He further adds, "My inspiration has been my grandfather and grandmom - they were great people. One of the important things I learnt from them was be true to yourself. And value is important."
He explains, "A person should be a hired simply on merit, not because he is part of the family or any other reason."
An interesting insight is that "about 60 per cent of the wine-drinking population are women." If you think that maybe women are aware of the connect with the brand, youre in for a surprise. Salvatore doesnt mention the name Ferragamo on his wine bottles. It simply states the estate - Il Borro Estate and Castiglion del Bosco Estate. Looks like the man, wants to make his individual identity. Way to go!
