The storyteller returnsThree Mistakes of My Life, is the third book by writer Chetan Bhagat. The book that releases on May 8 claims to have a pre-order of two lakh copies already. Chetan’s earlier books include Five Point Someone and One night @ the Call Centre (made into the movie titled Hello).
“We have pushed forward the release of the book from July to May so that it can be a nice summer read,” says Chetan. It’s often remarked that his books have all the ingredients of a Bollywood film.
Chetan agrees, “We’ve all grown up on Bollywood. We like drama, masala and a good climax. I like to write in that way too.” Chetan adds, “Three Mistakes of My Life is set in Ahmedabad. The book focuses on entrepreneurship. While doing my MBA in Ahmedabad, I realised that all youngsters in the city wanted to set up their own businesses, even if it was selling bananas. That’s what makes this place different.”
Chetan also met his wife Anusha there. Later, it was for her that Chetan finally moved to Mumbai from Hong Kong after a decade.
“She got an amazing job offer here. I didn’t want to hold her back. I also couldn’t stay away from the country any longer. It’s given me fame, love and money. I got a decent job in investment banking here. Hence I decided to return,” Chetan explains.
So how are his three-year-old twins Ishan and Shyam coping in Mumbai? “I’m glad I’m back. I didn’t want my kids to grow up as Chinese back in Hong Kong,” smiles Chetan.
However, his kids have a serious problem with Chetan. “They once asked me, ‘How can you tell stories to others? You are supposed to tell them just to us’,” laughs Chetan.
