Scores of devotees visit Shani temples every week. The tying of Neembu-Mirchi, to ward off the evil eye, is an age-old custom, as also the practice of tying sacred threads and talisman, and wearing faith rings... Some of us may pooh-pooh these as superstition; but deep down, there is no denying that all such customs are primarily driven by the human tendency to do whatever is possible to secure our future, near and distant.

The future is intriguing; and that is, perhaps, one reason why Astrology, as a subject, has been so revered and consulted with. But you may wonder: can the position of the stars upset your tummy? Renuka Kajale speaks to renowned astrologer Bejan Daruwalla (pictured) and finds out more.

What is about Astrology that makes it so popular?

Astrology has always been popular because it is aimed at guiding you to reach your goals safer and faster. It is like a lift, which takes you directly to your destination with less effort.

Can one predict the future?

With the help of Astrology? Yes, definitely. For instance, in a 1990 edition of the Eve's Weekly, I had predicted that Bhutto's name will be wiped out, that she will be assassinated. I had also predicted in the same edition that India will be 21st century super power... And so far, the going has been great for India.

Can you predict your future?

I can, but as a belief, I consult my seniors, who taught me the nuances of Astrology, and my astrologer friends. I am a devout follower of Lord Ganesha. I have entirely trusted my destiny to His will. I will go towards whichever destination the Almighty steers the boat of my life. I also strongly believe in one of the Prophet Mohammad's teachings that doing one good to someone, giving him/her one opportunity will, in turn, open thousand doors of opportunity for you and reduce the burden of your sins.

Does knowing one's future make one more conscious of it?

I really do not think so. On the contrary, having a hint of the future could help you be more prepared for it. It is more of a pre-warning against causalities, much like an insurance cover... It can help avert obstacles in life. Similarly, knowing something positive about your future could stimulate you to achieve your goals and maintain a positive countenance.

Can you change what is in store for someone in future?

It is possible to a great extent through rituals and aquiring gem stones that can avert negative influences of certain planets. Such execises are cannot change your future absolutley but are believed to provide a shield against unpleasant occurances and make your lives less problematic. Helping the underpreviledged, orphans, contributing generously for charitable causes are also believed to reduce the force of evil affects in your lives.

What has been the most satisfactory experience in your career as astrologer?

Giving the Jyotish Ratna award to my son, Nastur. Seeing him become an independent astrologer himself, and people accepting him and seeking his advice is extremely satisfying.
